Creative learning and well-being grounded in visual storytelling

Designing creative learning experiences and community storytelling projects that combine visual narrative, mindfulness, and social-emotional learning to deepen connection and understanding

Andrea Passarella is a contemporary visual storyteller and educator with over 20 years of experience in photography, arts education, and contemplative pedagogy.

She blends photography with reflective practice, guiding students and creative learners of all ages to make intentional choices, take creative risks, and develop a visual language that is both technically strong and personally meaningful.

Her work integrates leadership, mentorship, and facilitation, supporting individuals and groups as they navigate complex creative and learning experiences with clarity, curiosity, and purpose.

From studying with renowned photographer Mary Ellen Mark in the neighborhoods of Oaxaca to leading workshops in Los Angeles and conducting research in higher education, Andrea’s work has unfolded across classrooms, studios, and community spaces, where relationships, presence, and trust shape the learning experience — an approach reflected in Mark’s observation:

“You have a warm and great way with people, and it shows in your pictures.” ~ MEM

Across settings, Andrea designs experiences where relationships, presence, and trust shape the learning process.

“I’ve learned that where we come from shapes how we experience the world—and how we walk alongside others. Some of my earliest experiences of discovery came from being outdoors, paying attention, and learning to listen beyond words. Those early moments of noticing became the roots of my contemplative practice and continue to guide how I live and work today.

I believe no artistic or learning practice is complete without mindfulness—an ongoing commitment to observing, reflecting, and being present. This presence creates space for growth, inviting us to meet each moment with curiosity, care, and openness.

I’m here to support others in their own journeys of exploration—their own mesearch—and to walk alongside the discoveries that unfold when curiosity and presence come together”

“You don’t take pictures with your camera. You take pictures with your heart and mind.” ~ Arnold Newman

Andrea’s work lives at the intersection of mindfulness, education, and creative practice—supporting individuals and communities in reconnecting with what matters most. She integrates workshops, mentorship, and long-form storytelling to help learners and collaborators notice deeply, express fully, and bring presence into their daily lives

This moment is part of Matriarch, a project shaped by oral tradition, storytelling, and familial memory. Working in the kitchen alongside my mother, I listen, I ask, and I move with the women in my family, connecting to a lineage of matriarchs—their labor, resilience, and stories.

The work that follows invites you to wander, notice, and explore—through a portfolio of images, stories, and moments captured along the way. Each piece reflects the practice of mindfulness, storytelling, and creative curiosity
